There's not a clear cut solution in obtaining the experience you need; it's the situation of the double-edge sword. You need experience to get the job; you need tho job to get experience. You are on the right track utilizing volunteer opportunities though.

You should make sure the opportunity has the potential of opening up into a paying position too. Ask the pertinent question before signing up. Give of your time in the setting that will allow the powers-that-be to see the type of employee you'll make.

Another possibility, find out if the volunteer position places you in front of other companies that could be hiring. Remember, networking is key. If you can meet others in your field, you can use them to assist you in getting your word out.

Networking yourself by becoming a member of associations related to your field of interest can also open up doors of employment for you. Don't just become a member, but become an ACTIVE member.

The reason I know this works; it's how I landed my first job out of college. This volunteer organization needed a president, and I was interested in the organization. They had all of the other officer positions filled. I really didn't know what I was doing, but knew if I committed I'd give 100%. At my first "real" job interview, I was hired over experienced applicants. The manager said if I could get the association to agree on a budget, I could get a prospect to buy from me. Two years later, I was selling vascular access products in OR. Once you get your first door open, the rest will open up based on your work ethic.

Many people become very disappointed and frustrated if they find that they have spent years acquiring an education and are misplaced in the field in which they want to work. I've learned from experience your resume is one of the keys to success in your career goals. The resume itself wont get you hired, but it will be key to be considered by hiring managers; for internships or career work.

I would also recommend using your Career Management Center on campus. They're plenty of individuals there who's main objective is to find placement for students in their respected majors, such as internships! If you couple this with a good personality you should be in good shape. Searching websites like healthcareerweb.com is also a good place to start for the medical field. This will give you a good idea of how the the medical industry operates in terms of hiring. Good luck!!
